The slot is a great option for wide receivers who are fast, as they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a reliable target for intermediate and short routes.
The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great choice for a sleeper this year, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on intermediate and short-to middle routes, as that's the way he performed in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.
Percentage of Snaps in the Slot
The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's abilities, as certain receivers are better in the slot but don't play further.
Alshon Jeffrey, for example, leads the league in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8), but is only 6th in slot receiving scores (58.5). On the other hand, some receivers excel inside and aren't able to do much on the outer. For example, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he completed an astounding 74% of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of the time on his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are more effective when they are lined up inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.
On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by using his slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside for base defense. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers who have a high slot grade score touchdowns about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers, compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this list. This is an excellent way to generate matchup benefits for your team. It also helps clarify why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this list, but he's an elite wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman, another player who is able to put huge numbers on both types of targets, is another example. He is one of the best in the game at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb catcher who is contested.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, which makes him a crucial part of his team's defense. On the contrary, he's been unable to stop passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these types of targets. This is the result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who can't match up with Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
